Tips for early spring planting:

Pansies- You can start pansy seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before you plan on transplanting them. Plant seeds in late winter for early spring and summer flowering. Pansies like sun and cooler temperatures. Water regularly.

Lilium- Select a site that gets full sun. For dependable blooms, lilies need six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day. Apply a thin layer of compost each spring. Water thoroughly.

Dahlia- Select a planting site with full sun. Dahlias grow more blooms with 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight. They love the morning sunlight best. Choose a location with a bit of protection from the wind. Provide a deep watering 2 to 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes with a sprinkler.

Gladiolus- Plant gladiolus bulbs in the spring once danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Put a 2– to 4–inch layer of mulch around your gladioli to keep your soil moist and help prevent weeds.

Carrots- Plan to plant seeds outdoors 3 to 5 weeks before the last spring frost date. Make sure your soil is free of stones; carrots need deeply tilled soil that they can push through. Water at least one inch per week. Weed diligently.

Lettuce- Lettuce is a cool-season crop that grows well in the spring and will even tolerate a light frost. You should be able to sow additional seeds every two weeks for a continuous harvest throughout the growing season.
